COMMUNITY PARTNER DETAILS

This project was designed based on the principles of ancestral belief and also based on the laws and customs of the people of Bimbia. It addresses three major challenges faced by the Bakweri Indigenous people of Bimbia in preserving their cultural identity: deforestation of ancestral forest, threats posed by civilization and modernization particularly to the Bakweri language and dialect (popularly known as Mbongo Chopbi), and local governance and the recent Anglophone crisis.

By the end of this year the people will be able to share their identity including protecting their seven cultural sites in the Bimbia forest, host radio programmes with Ocean City Radio, identify possible traditional dance with their costumes, bring together traditional doctors to train Bimbia youth, document the language and organize a cultural festival that will bring together Bimbia elites from the disapora, and stop the over-harvesting of traditional trees for timber.
